The benefits of salt water – how can a swim in the sea boost your health? Here in Mallorca, we are fortunate to have a gorgeous expanse of ocean right on our doorstep and, thanks to a wonderful climate, we have the freedom to dip in for a swim or simply soak our feet at almost any time during the year
While there’s nothing better than the refreshing feeling of cool water on our skin though, there are many other benefits that our body can benefit from, with an everyday soak in salt water.
The restorative powers of natural salt water
The ocean contains a significantly high level of essential minerals, including sodium, chloride, sulphate, magnesium, and calcium. It’s also brimming with beneficial amino acids, trace elements (zinc, iodine, copper and selenium), vitamins and living organisms. All of these components play a powerful role in helping to boost immunity, improve circulation and soothe skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema and rashes.
The effect of sea water on immunity:
The simple act of breathing in the sea air exposes your body to negatively charged ions; molecules that help strengthen your immune defense mechanisms and calm the nervous system. By taking a dip you can intensify the benefits further, giving your whole body the opportunity to absorb the vital minerals and trace elements contained in the sea water.
The effect of sea water on circulation:
A regular plunge in the sea can greatly improve the whole cardiovascular system – when you immerse your body in cold water, the blood naturally rushes to surround every vital organ. As a result, your heart pumps more efficiently and blood flows through all of the vessels, providing your entire body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function optimally.
The effect of sea water on skin:
Researchers have found that the high levels of magnesium, along with the many other trace minerals and antibacterial properties found in sea water, can significantly reduce skin inflammation and improve skin hydration overall. These natural elements help to draw out impurities and toxins, in turn speeding up healing of wounds and cell regeneration for skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
So the next time you’re casually walking by the water’s edge, remember to breathe a little deeper and perhaps even go for a dip, to gain instant access to all of the sea’s miracle minerals – you may find that those few short moments can leave you feeling better than ever.
